There was a time when uttering the brand name 'Ferragamo' conjured up images of round-toe shoes with a sensible heel and a prim little grosgrain ribbon bow adorning the toe. Well not anymore. Cristina Ortiz has seen to that. Ms. Ortiz unveiled her first women's collection for Salvatore Ferragamo yesterday in Milan. Gone are the safe and conservative garments in favor of sexy trousers and sleek, fluid columns to flatter your womanly curves. Her paired down and sophisticated aesthetic including sharp tailoring and draping was complemented by a clean cool palette dominated by white, midnight blue and deep purple. The one exception to that palette was a slinky bottle green silk-satin column dress that calls to mind 1930's Hollywood glamour.
Of course, this is not Ms. Ortiz' first tour de force. She is credited with reviving the House of Lanvin (pre-Alber Elbaz) in the mid-1990's where she brought back a youthful, sexy coolness to a formerly venerable fashion brand that had been allowed to wither away. While the Ferragamo brand was obviously not in the same predicament upon Ms. Ortiz' arrival, it's clear from this first collection that uttering the name 'Ferragamo' will now conjure up a decidedly more sleek and sexy image. Well done Ms. Ortiz! The Luxe Chronicles can't wait to see more.
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles
