I must admit, I've always had a soft spot for Vivienne Westwood. While her aesthetic may not always be my cup of tea, I admire her staying power and her willingness to put herself out there. At almost 66 years of age, she is still every bit the feisty ant-establishment designer she was back in the day when the punk ethos carried her to prominence in the late 1970's. She took to the streets in 2007 to protest the British involvement in the War in Iraq and most recently, during the unveiling of her Red Label Fall/Winter 2008 collection at London Fashion Week, she sent models down the runway with placards emblazoned with the slogan "Fair Trial My Arse". Catchy, isn't it?
The gesture is in support of the human rights charity "Reprieve" for which she also designed a pair of "Guantanamo Orange" knickers (panties) in conjunction with U.K.-based lingerie company Agent Provocateur (incidentally, Agent Provocateur was co-founded by Westwood's son, Joe Corre). Reprieve is a U.K. based legal action group that works to enforce the legal rights of detainees in the war on terror. The knickers went on sale in Agent Provocateur stores in the UK and the U.S. on February 16th. (Source)
