Regular readers of The Luxe Chronicles know that I'm fond of poking fun at Karl Lagerfeld from time to time. It's not that I don't like him - I most emphatically do! I think he's a gifted designer, a brilliant marketeer and a fashion icon (a real one that is). In fact, he's managed to achieve what most designers would not even have the audacity to attempt - his name and image have become as closely intertwined with the fashion empire that Coco built as Coco herself. For this, I tip my hat off to him. It's just that some of his side projects are a little, ummm, how can I put this delicately? Opportunistic? Cynical? Even by fashion industry standards, some of these projects have raised more than one expertly arched eyebrow. Endorsing a diet book and a cake? A lead figurine and a teddy bear in his image?
This time around however, I have nothing but good things to say about his latest endorsement project. Mr. Lagerfeld has generously offered his services to promote a road safety campaign in France. It's cute, funny and will probably be highly effective. The poster for the campaign depicts Lagerfeld with his trademark dark glasses, dark suit and cut-off gloves and a bright yellow reflective vest required for all motorists as of July 1 by the revised French road safety code. The caption, loosely translated, reads: "It's yellow, it's ugly, it doesn't go with anything but it could save your life." Who could deny the appeal of a self-deprecating fashion icon? Well done Mr. Lagerfeld! Now, perhaps you could design a more fashionable safety vest nipped at the waist with the familiar intertwined double C's in reflective fabric. Ce serait plus chic, non?
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles

This is hilarious! But it's such a good slogan. I love Karl, he's such a quirky man.
