What does the chicest city in Canada (Montreal) have in common with the most liberal city in the U.S. (San Francisco)? Apparently, a common admiration of iconic French designer Yves Saint Laurent hence the co-sponsored retrospective of his work spanning forty years of creativity and ground-breaking fashion. Indeed, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco have joined forces with Fondation Pierre Berge -Yves Saint Laurent to present the most complete exhibit of the designer's work to date with a particular focus on haute couture. The timing of the retrospective is all the more poignant given that the designer passed away Sunday, June 1, a mere few days after the retrospective opened in Montreal.
The exhibit includes 145 garments including full accessories as well as drawings and video from the archives of Fondation Pierre Berge -Yves Saint Laurent. As an added bonus, the retrospective has been curated in collaboration with noted French fashion historian Florence Muller. The exhibit opened on May 29, 2008 and will be on display in Montreal until September 28, 2008. After Montreal, the exhibit will travel to San Francisco where it will be presented at the de Young Museum of San Francisco, from November 1, 2008 to March 1, 2009. Oh good, I didn't miss out on the talk of this exhibition yet! Being in Japan has me completely out of sync with the fashion blogosphere!
I would love to meet up with fellow bloggers for this exhibition, especially now that YSL has passed away recently. I have to say that I'm very much a fashion neophyte when it comes to big designers like YSL, but that's why exhibitions like this exist :)

Ooo! That's a lovely idea. Better yet, we could meet up in Montreal over the summer and explore the exhibit together with Dahlia from Dualite!
