I may not agree with or even like all the ideas she puts forth in Paris Vogue but when Carine Roitfeld gets things right, she gets them really, really right and I fall in love with fashion magazines, her fashion magazine in particular, all over again. The September 2008 issue does precisely this. It is refined, evocative and inspirational - in short, everything a fashion magazine should be. The editorial spread inspired by Roitfeld's own often-copied-but-rarely-equaled personal style in which a Roitfeld look-alike cavorts in a potent mix of Balenciaga, Azzedine Alaia and Prada fashion complemented with gorgeous David Webb jewelry is quite simply stunning. The spread was styled by Roitfeld herself and shot by photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (click below to see images). The images depict all the hallmarks of Roitfeld's style (the stick-straight hair, fur, leather, edgy black fashions and cigarette) yet manage to look natural and un-staged. While it would be easy to let envy override our senses (I for one can only aspire to look that cool and sexy at her age), a recent Times Online profile of Roitfeld depicts her as rather shy and self-deprecating. It's difficult to dislike a woman who eschews botox and readily admits to giving up her miniskirts because she considers herself too old. Zut!
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles
