There's a wonderful interview of designer Azzedine Alaia (one of my all time favorites) by Stephanie Seymour Brant posted on Interview Magazine's website. Alaia briefly recounts his beginnings in fashion, his arrival in Paris from his native Tunisia and shares anecdotes about his family and close friends. The interview is accompanied by a gorgeous series of photographs by Craig McDean featuring Gisele Bundchen.
Alaia, along with Roland Mouret (another favorite), are among a dwindling number of designers who seem to have rejected the "bigger, faster, more" ethos that has come to define the fashion industry of late. Instead, they each offer a very distinct aesthetic which makes their garments instantly recognizable and coveted the world over. Moreover, they're not trying to be all things to all women and are unapologetic about it. There are no diffusion lines, no flashy advertising campaigns, no celebrity spokemodels. When I purchase an Azzedine Alaia or RM by Roland Mouret garment, I know I'm getting the purest distillation of their vision or viewpoint. I love that about them.
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles
