The fashion in Mad Men is so eye-catching that it would be easy to forget just how compelling the story lines are and how strong the acting is. Like most fans of the critically acclaimed television series, I frequently cringe while watching scenes depicting the rampant racism and misogyny that seems to pervade the interactions at Sterling Cooper, the fictional ad agency where some of the most interesting (and shocking) interactions take place. I'm often left asking myself "Was this really how it was back then?" or "Did men really get away with that kind of behavior" or simply "What a b******!"
Well, now you can get a first-person account from two women who actually lived the Mad Men experience in real life: Mary Wells Lawrence and Charlotte Beers, two of the very first women ad executives who managed to rise to the top of their profession in spite of the less-than-favorable conditions for women. As is so often the case with social interactions, they have a slightly divergent opinion of what is and isn't realistic about the television series. Enjoy!
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles
This is incredibly realistic for sure.
