No one will ever accuse me of being a car enthusiast, luxury or otherwise, but the news that French car manufacturer Citroen plans to introduce an updated version of the classic 'DS' fills me with excitement nonetheless. While some consider the car's design quirky or weird even, I find it compellingly sexy, sleek and stylish. Perhaps its just that I can totally imagine myself stepping out of one dressed to kill and ready for a night on the town.
The original 'DS' made its debut in the mid-1950's and became the official car of the French president. The 'DS' (a play on words suggesting 'deesse', the French word for 'goddess') owes its technical prowess to French engineer Andre Lefebvre and its sensuous design to Italian industrial designer Flaminio Bertoni. It became synonymous with France's post-WWII ingenuity and technical skill when President Charles de Gaulle credited it's hydropneumatic suspension with enabling him to escape an assassination attempt in 1962. (Source) Citroen eventually ceased its production in 1975.
The revised 'DS' is set to roll out of factories in 2010. The DS is to the French what the Mini Cooper is to the British and the Volkswagen 'Beetle' is to Americans and so, clearly Citroen is aiming to capitalize on the nostalgia factor in reviving this classic. As long as they resist the urge to tinker too much with the original design, I think they'll have a hit on their hands. Definitely something to look forward to.
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles

The original is a thing of beauty. I wouldn't say the same for the update if this is truly what it looks like:

Oh wow and brilliant - this is such good news. All I need is for Renault to bring back the Renault 4 and I'll be doubly happy. I love French cars!
