In keeping with the times, it will be a dark and moody Fall ahead, at least if Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy has anything to say about it. The images released today via WWD are scheduled to debut in Paris Vogue's August issue which is fitting since the campaign could almost be mistaken for an editorial spread in Paris Vogue.
Shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott (favorites of Carine Roitfeld), the campaign channels classic 1980's Parisian chic complete with bold shoulders, strong lip color and a "don't mess with me" attitude fit for the tough corporate times ahead. To my mind, the most interesting aspect of this campaign is the demeanor of the models depicted. While they may be lounging around what looks like a French hotel suite, these women look ready for confrontation. Moreover, they look grown-up, a nice departure from the jailbait aesthetic that has dominated in recent times. Artistic vision aside, I suspect this campaign had at least something to do with the fact that core luxury consumers tend to fall within the over-45 age category. Cold calculations aside, I find it rather hot.
Sincerely,
