Sorry for the delay in posting today. Yesterday was a hectic day and it ended with a late-ish evening at the Claridge's for the unveiling of the Christmas tree designed by John Galliano. Consequently, I'm somewhat sluggish today and ever so slightly off my game. Regarding the tree, I must say that the images do not do it justice! In a fitting tribute to Galliano's talent, it is full of small, offbeat details that make it more akin to set design or art installation than mere holiday decoration. The project was executed with the assistance of Galliano's set decorator responsible for the stunning backgrounds at his runway shows. Kudos to all involved.
The event also featured acclaimed fashion photographer Roxanne Lewitt who graciously signed copies of her book Backstage Dior for the entire duration of the event. I happened to be standing in line to have my book signed by Ms. Lewitt with veteran British fashion journalist Avril Groom. During our rather long wait, she regaled me with stories about Galliano as a struggling young designer (the story about his being so poor when he first started that he had to sleep under his design table in his studio on the King's Road in London is absolutely true).
Incidentally, there are a number of well-known faces in the crowd who rather cheekily "jumped the queue" ahead of us mere mortals. A word to the wise: If you happen to find yourselves standing in a queue with Avril Groom, I would think twice about pulling that old trick. She does not take kindly to it nor does she believe in remaining silent about it regardless of who you are or how "famous" you think you are. Good for her!
If you happen to find yourselves in London over the holidays, do make a point of popping into the lobby of the Claridge's to see the tree. It's well worth the detour.
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles
