One has to feel for fashion designers these days. Not only is fashion a cut throat industry with a dismal survival rate for even the most talented and best trained candidates but they also have to compete with the likes of singers, starlets and television reality stars. And if that wasn't enough to contend with, now even members of the British royal family are getting in on the act.
Personally, I think we need to introduce a new word to refer to celebrities and public figures who dabble in fashion but who wouldn't know a bateaux neckline from a bateaux-mouche. Preventing the appropriation of the term "designer" by those who seek to cash in without investing the time to acquire the skills is a first step in regaining the respect that actual design professionals deserve. While it may not seem like much, drawing a clear distinction between those who have earned the title and the poseurs would be a start. Any suggestions?
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles
