When it comes to gastronomy and l'art de table, my tastes tend to run towards the more conventional. So when I received a bottle of Mumm's champagne and the new champagne bucket commissioned by them from French interior architect and designer Patrick Jouin to try out, I was skeptical of its appeal. I say this with all due respect to Mr. Jouin - I've long admired his design work (most notably the Van Cleef & Arpels' flagship boutique on Paris' Place Vendome and Alain Ducasse's outpost at the Dorchester Hotel in London). And it's not that I don't appreciate cutting edge design - it's just that where champagne is concerned, I have a particular affection for a traditional silver bucket (preferably one with a few dents and a bit of wear & tear as testament to celebrations past).
Dubbed the "George" in honor of G.H. Mumm's founder Georges Hermann Mumm, the champagne bucket is part of a set of service equipment destined for hotels, restaurants and bars. Made of molded plastic, the handle has been carefully designed to address the daily constraints of restaurant and bar staff and the bottom has a special ridge designed to tilt the bottle and hold it securely at the ideal resting angle. Clever indeed.
I had occasion to use the bucket over the course of the Easter holiday and I must admit, the ergonomic design is flawless. While I'm not ready to give up the traditional elegance of my silver champagne bucket anytime soon (scratches, dents and all), my husband clearly prefers the updated version by Mr. Jouin which he finds sleek and sexy. As with so many other aspects of our marriage, they'll just have to coexist (and happily so).
Sincerely,
The Luxe Chronicles
It's growing on me too, I must admit.
