"You want to do what with my images?!?!"
To watch the stream of invectives pouring out of Instagram users via Twitter yesterday was truly awsome. The backlash triggered by Instagram's sweeping policy change regarding monetization of user generated content was swift and, at least for now, seemingly effective. In a blog post entitled "Thank you, and we’re listening", Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom published the company's mea culpa.
If all of this sounds familiar, that's probably because Systrom is effectively taking a page out of Mark Zuckerberg's privacy and data collection playbook. I don't expect this is the last we've heard of this issue (Instagram has to start making money at some point) and I don't believe this truce will hold. Remember, there is no such thing as a free lunch on the Internet.
